Long sweeping bends manufactured to customer requirements up to 500mm in diameter are proving to be an excellent choice against segmented bends, or commonly known as lobster back bends.
The bends are popular in 5, 6 and 8 inch diameter for milk powder factories and delicate food process conveying like the potato chip industry.
The manager of the Hawera stainless steel fabricator, Mr. Raikes says "a long sweeping redius bend offers smoother, quieter flow, less back pressure in the conveying like, less wear in an abrasive product application, and provides less product damage."
The other main difference is that the weld seams on these bends run the length of the bend, so there is an important self cleaning advantage.
Mr, Raikes says, "we don't try to compete with the larger diameter imported standard centre line radius bends, but if you want a longer than normal radius or an odd diameter, then our game is in double curve forming stainless steel which includes bends, domes, hemispheres and mirror polished spheres for architecture of which the company exports world wide." He goes on to explain, "we are also developing explosive forming techniques for the double curve forming of more complex shapes where explosives are used to form metal.
